Dig a Hole – Plant a Tree: Environment

Environmental Footprint
“We will strive to make the smallest possible impact on the environment through limited emission and separated waste flows and by utilizing opportunities for recycling.”

So we have stated in our policy declaration, and we are serious about this negotiated environmental agreement.

LCA & Responsible Care

We have participated in Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) projects. As a member of the organisation Responsible Care, we are committed to monitoring, sustainable development and a continuous improvement in operations.

Responsible Care
Do good and talk about it!
Responsible Care is a worldwide initiative of the chemical industry. The aim of the participating companies is to achieve continual improvement in the areas of the environment and health & safety. The public is to be kept informed of progress. The idea originated in Canada. Companies there first formulated the principles of Responsible Care in 1984. www.responsiblecare.org

Specifically, these comprise the tasks:

  • Environmental protection: products and processes should continually be made safer and more environmentally friendly.
  • Product responsibility: well-founded assessment of products, resulting in the suspension of production where the assessment suggests as much.
  • Occupational safety/health protection and plant safety/hazard prevention.
  • Transportation safety.
  • Constructive dialogue with employees, customers and the public.

Recultivation

Talc mining is low-impact mining. The earth excavated from the mine is formed into flowing hills. Topsoil is laid over for reforestation. Some of the earth is put back into the mine to form a lake.

Water used in the milling and flotation process is delivered to run-off ponds surrounding the mine. They support local wildlife – crabs, fish, insects and birds, such as swans, swallows and hawks. A pair of swans returns annually to its nesting site.

Certification and Monitoring

Our factories are certified according to environmental management standard ISO 14001:2004. In addition, the Environmental Management System follows up the local environment permits with a complex environmental monitoring programme covering surface and ground water quality, air quality, noise, dust, vibrations, flora and fauna. By unscheduled inspections, environmental officers check these aspects. Monitoring is performed in-house and by independent certified institutions which report directly to the local environmental authorities.

Sustainable resource management is an imperative, and energy conservation is an important decision-making factor for investments.

Waste

Paper, bio waste, metals and rubber – e.g. from conveyor belts and mills – are recycled. Waste that cannot be recycled is disposed of according to Finnish environmental requirements.

Green House Gases

Talc mining is a low CO2-producing process. Furthermore, Mondo Minerals has already achieved a reduction of more than 90% of CO2 emissions between 1999 and 2009.

Short Transportation Distances

“Globally available – locally produced”. Whenever and wherever possible, we produce in the vicinity of the customer, instead of transporting our products across the entire globe. Our manufacturing and monitoring processes ensure that our products are always supplied in the same consistent quality.

Our Product

Our number one advantage: talc is natural – just a rock – and inert. Most products containing talc are recyclable. In addition, we strive to create environmentally friendly applications for our products. Take double classification, for example: double classified talcs have an extremely narrow particle spectrum. The reduced surface area means that you can add more talc to a given matrix (binders in paints or polyolefins in plastics) without increasing the viscosity of the system. This makes your processes more economical while simultaneously reducing their environmental impact – less need for polymer resins and solvents and lower VOC emissions.
